Overweight Christians use John 10:10 to justify behaviour

Church Life

Overweight Christians have hit back at those who accuse them of gluttony by saying that Jesus clearly advocated their behaviour in John 10:10:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

“How can Jesus say he has come to give us life to the full if we are still hungry after a meal?” asks Jeanette Smith, a rotund Texan, “And Jesus was all about food – which is why we celebrate his sacrifice with the Lord’s supper or love feasts as they used to be called.  It was only those Pharisees who complained that he was eating and drinking in Mt 11:19!”

“Satan is the one who comes to steal calories through diets and those low-cal meals,” says Bob Williams, a man who makes Goliath look like a grasshopper, “I ain’t buying those meals ’cause God said in Isaiah 55 ‘Why spend money …on what does not satisfy?’ and they don’t satisfy me none. I might as well eat cardboard!”

Certainly, the area of food is a contentious one, especially after the dubious methods used at the Supernatural Weight Loss conference with their so-called prayers for a “hedge of protection about one’s waistline”.

However, some Christians claim that this latest the use of John 10:10 for eating is way out of context, “It’s life to the full not stomachs to the full,” said Jim Quick, “So it’s clearly about being busy doing work for the LORD.  That’s why our church has prayer meeting on Monday evening, small groups on Tuesdays, coffee mornings on Wednesdays, women’s Bible study on Thursdays, Committee meetings on Fridays and worship group on Saturdays.”

We at the Cee can’t help feeling that both these groups have missed something and are hoping that you fine readers can help us out as to the real meaning of life to the full…
